Pintakiinnitys, often translated as surface mounting or smt (surface-mount technology), is a method used to produce electronic devices by placing individual components onto the surface of a printed circuit board (pcb). Unlike through-hole technology, where component leads are inserted into holes drilled through the board, pintakiinnitys components have small leads or terminals that are soldered directly to pads on the board's surface.

This manufacturing technique offers several advantages. It allows for smaller and more densely packed electronic components, leading to more compact and lighter devices. The automated nature of pintakiinnitys processes also increases production speed and reduces manufacturing costs compared to older methods. Furthermore, it generally leads to improved electrical performance due to shorter signal paths.

The process typically involves several automated steps. First, solder paste, a mixture of solder and flux, is applied to the pads on the pcb using a stencil. Finally, the assembled board passes through a reflow oven, which melts the solder paste, creating a permanent electrical and mechanical connection between the component and the board.
