Piirilevyinä, known more formally as printed circuit boards (PCBs), are the backbone of modern electronics. They serve as a foundation for assembling electronic components, connecting them through conductive pathways etched onto a non-conductive substrate. The term "piirilevyinä" is the Finnish word for PCBs, reflecting their widespread use and importance in countries where Finnish is spoken, such as Finland.

The creation of a PCB involves a multi-step manufacturing process. Initially, a design is created using specialized software, outlining the layout of components and the intricate network of traces that will carry electrical signals. This design is then transferred to a substrate material, typically fiberglass reinforced epoxy (FR-4), which is chosen for its electrical insulation properties and mechanical strength. Copper foil is laminated onto the substrate, and unwanted copper is chemically removed to leave only the desired conductive traces. Holes are drilled for component leads, and a protective solder mask is applied. Finally, a surface finish is added to prevent oxidation and ensure good solderability.

PCBs are ubiquitous, found in virtually every electronic device, from simple calculators and remote controls to complex computers, smartphones, and industrial machinery. Their standardization and mass production have significantly reduced the cost and complexity of electronic device assembly, making sophisticated technology accessible to a broad audience. The evolution of PCB technology continues to drive innovation, enabling smaller, more powerful, and more versatile electronic products.
