The phoque, commonly known as a seal, is a marine mammal belonging to the order Pinnipedia, which also includes sea lions and walruses. Seals are adapted to life in aquatic environments, with streamlined bodies, flippers for propulsion, and dense layers of blubber for insulation against cold water temperatures. They are found in oceans and seas worldwide, with some species inhabiting polar regions, while others prefer temperate or tropical coastal areas.

Seals exhibit two primary body types: earless seals (Phocidae), such as the harbor seal and gray seal, and eared seals (Otariidae), which include sea lions and fur seals. The latter have external ears and more mobile hind flippers, allowing them to move more efficiently on land. Seals primarily feed on fish, squid, crustaceans, and occasionally other marine mammals, depending on the species and habitat.

Reproduction in seals varies by species but generally involves a breeding season where males compete for mates. Females give birth to a single pup, which is nursed with milk rich in fat. Seals are known for their vocalizations, particularly during mating seasons, and some species, like the harbor seal, communicate using a variety of sounds.

Conservation status varies among seal species, with some, such as the Mediterranean monk seal, classified as endangered due to threats like habitat loss, pollution, and hunting. Others, like the harbor seal, are more abundant but still face challenges from human activities. Efforts to protect seal populations include habitat conservation, sustainable fishing practices, and anti-hunting regulations.

Seals play an important ecological role by controlling prey populations and serving as prey for larger marine predators. They are also culturally significant in many indigenous communities, where they have been hunted for food, clothing, and tools for centuries.
