Pedal position refers to the spatial relationship between a foot and the pedal it operates, including how far and at what angle the pedal is depressed. It is a fundamental input parameter in many human–machine interfaces, particularly those controlled by the feet.

In automotive engineering, pedals such as the accelerator, brake, and clutch translate foot movement into mechanical or electronic signals. Modern vehicles frequently use pedal position sensors to measure how far a pedal is pressed. The sensor data feeds engine management, brake systems, and safety features, often within drive-by-wire or electronic throttle control architectures. Because precise pedal position affects reaction and safety, vehicle design emphasizes ergonomic pedal layout and predictable response. Improper pedal position or interference by floor mats can lead to unintended input.

In cycling, pedal position describes the location of the rider’s foot on the crank during the pedal stroke. Effective pedal position depends on saddle height and fore-aft position, cleat alignment, crank length, and cadence. Efficient pedaling is aided by keeping the ankle, knee, and hip aligned through the stroke, minimizing wasted motion and reducing strain.

Other uses include foot-operated controls in machinery and accessibility devices, where pedal position is adjusted to match the operator’s reach and comfort. Pedal position can be measured in terms of crank rotation angle, pedal depression percentage, or sensor readings in electronic systems. Technicians and fitters use these measurements to optimize performance, safety, and ergonomics.
