Paravent is a folding screen or windbreak used to partition spaces, create privacy, or shield occupants from wind, sun, or drafts. The term is of French origin and is used in English to refer to similar screens, typically portable and freestanding.

Construction and variety: Most paravents consist of a lightweight frame—often wood, bamboo, or metal—holding hinged panels that are covered with textiles, paper, leather, or painted surfaces. Panels commonly come in sets of three or four, though six-panel variants exist. The design ranges from plain and utilitarian to highly decorative, with paintings, lacquering, or inlays.

Origins and cultural context: Paravents have roots in East Asian screen-making, with predecessors such as Chinese screens and Japanese byobu influencing European interiors from the Renaissance onward. In Europe, they became prominent decorative objects in palaces and drawing rooms, particularly from the 16th to 19th centuries, and were often elaborately decorated or lacquered.
