It is primarily caused by a complex of fungi, with Phytophthora species often being the primary culprits, though bacterial infections can also contribute. The disease typically targets the apical meristem, the growing point of the palm located at the crown.

Symptoms of palmrot can vary depending on the specific pathogen and palm species, but common signs include a foul-smelling decay emanating from the bud. Leaves may start to yellow and wither, often from the youngest to the oldest. In advanced stages, the central spear leaf can be easily pulled out, revealing a rotten core. Flower and fruit production may cease or become abnormal. The disease progresses rapidly and is often fatal once the apical meristem is severely compromised.

Palmrot is often associated with environmental stressors such as waterlogged soil, poor drainage, over-fertilization, or physical damage to the bud. High humidity and warm temperatures can create favorable conditions for fungal and bacterial growth. Transmission can occur through contaminated soil, water, tools, or infected plant material.

Prevention and management strategies focus on maintaining palm health and avoiding conditions that favor disease development. Proper site selection with good drainage, avoiding over-watering, and minimizing injury to the crown are crucial. For ornamental palms, fungicides can be applied as a preventative measure, particularly during periods of high risk. However, once the apical meristem is significantly infected, treatment options are limited and often unsuccessful. Early detection and intervention are key to any management plan.
