Pallets can be made from wood, plastic, or metal, with sizes and standards varying by region. The EUR-pallet, at 800 by 1200 millimeters, is common in Europe, while the North American GMA pallet measures about 1016 by 1219 millimeters. ISO-standard pallets exist in several dimensions to support global trade. Wood pallets often carry ISPM 15 treatment marks for international shipments to prevent pest transfer.

Advantages of pallebasert systems include efficient space utilization, faster handling, improved safety, easier automation and inventory control, and better compatibility with cross-docking and intermodal transport. Palletization also standardizes unit loads, facilitating scalability in warehouses and distribution networks.

Challenges include pallet damage and maintenance, weight considerations, and environmental concerns, particularly with wooden pallets. Pests, moisture, and cleanliness requirements can affect storage conditions. Alternatives such as slip sheets exist, and pallet pooling programs can reduce waste and cost when managed effectively.

In practice, pallebasert logistics underpins much of modern supply chains, from manufacturing plants to e-commerce fulfillment centers, and is closely linked to concepts like palletization, unit load construction, and automated handling systems.
