Pakosti is a common name in Czech and Slovak for ragweeds, plants in the genus Ambrosia, especially Ambrosia artemisiifolia, an annual weed native to North America that has become widespread in Europe. These plants reach up to about 1.5 meters in height and have deeply divided leaves. They form yellow-green inflorescences that release large amounts of pollen during the late summer and autumn.

Ragweeds are known for their highly allergenic pollen, which can travel long distances by wind and is a major cause of hay fever and allergic asthma in areas where they are established. Pollen potency varies among species but is generally very high, making monitoring for pollen important for public health.

Ecology and spread: pakosti thrive in disturbed habitats, road verges, agricultural margins, and abandoned land. Management: Effective control combines prevention of seed formation, mechanical removal of young plants, mowing before flowering, and selective herbicide use where appropriate. Cleaning of vehicles and machinery and monitoring of transport routes help reduce new introductions.
