Orchestrators are systems or professionals that coordinate the components of a larger system to achieve a common objective. In technology, an orchestrator automates the arrangement, coordination, and management of computer services, resources, and workflows across distributed environments. It handles sequencing, dependency resolution, and lifecycle operations to ensure consistent outcomes.

Container orchestration specifically refers to managing containerized applications across clusters. It handles scheduling containers to hosts, service discovery, load balancing, scaling, rolling updates, health checks, and fault recovery. Popular examples include Kubernetes, Docker Swarm, and Apache Mesos, with Kubernetes being the dominant standard in many environments.

Workflow orchestration focuses on ordering and coordinating discrete tasks, data movement, and retries within data pipelines or business processes. It models dependencies, defines execution graphs, and ensures tasks run in the correct sequence, often with retry and backoff policies. Examples include Apache Airflow, Luigi, and Prefect.

In other domains, an orchestrator may be a person who arranges a composition for an orchestra, integrating parts for different instruments; network and service orchestration refers to coordinating resources and services across infrastructure. The term emphasizes centralized coordination rather than ad hoc automation.

Design considerations for orchestrators include idempotence, declarative configuration, observability, security, multi-tenancy, and fault tolerance. Effective orchestrators provide clear status visibility, reliable failure recovery, and predictable behavior across heterogeneous environments.
