Ohjasapuihin, also known as *Larix sibirica* or Siberian larch, is a deciduous coniferous tree native to the taiga regions of Siberia and parts of Mongolia. It is one of the few conifers that shed its needles annually, making it unique among its kind. This adaptation allows the tree to survive in cold climates where snow cover protects its roots from freezing temperatures.

Ohjasapuihin typically grows to a height of 20–30 meters, though some specimens can reach up to 40 meters. Its bark is reddish-brown and deeply furrowed, providing protection against harsh environmental conditions. The needles are soft, flexible, and turn golden-brown before falling in autumn, creating a striking contrast against the winter landscape.

The tree plays an important ecological role in its native habitat, providing habitat for various wildlife species and stabilizing soil in cold, often waterlogged environments. Its wood is valued for its durability and resistance to rot, making it useful in construction, furniture-making, and as firewood. Ohjasapuihin is also planted in colder regions as an ornamental tree due to its attractive foliage and adaptability.

In Finland, ohjasapuihin is sometimes referred to colloquially as *ohjaspuu* or *ohjasapu*, though these terms are more commonly associated with other larch species like *Larix decidua* (European larch). The tree is not native to Finland but is occasionally cultivated in northern and eastern regions where its cold-hardiness is beneficial. Its cultivation helps diversify forest ecosystems and supports sustainable forestry practices.
