Obstruktsioone is a medical term used in Estonian to describe obstruction or occlusion of a hollow structure in the body, resulting in partial or complete disruption of its contents or flow. The concept covers blockages that can occur in multiple organ systems, most commonly the gastrointestinal tract, but also the airways, biliary tract, and urinary tract.

The condition is typically classified as mechanical obstruktsioone, caused by a physical barrier such as a blocking mass, stone, adhesions, hernia, or tumor, and functional obstruktsioone, where movement through the organ is impaired without a physical blockage, as in paralytic ileus or neurogenic dysfunction. Obstructions can be intraluminal, extrinsic, or a combination of both, and they may present as partial or complete blockages.

Common causes vary by system. In the gastrointestinal tract, adhesions, hernias, tumors, volvulus, and gallstone ileus are frequent; in the respiratory tract, foreign bodies, edema, tumors, or severe infection may cause airway obstruction; in the urinary and biliary tracts, stones, strictures, or tumors can lead to obstruction.

Clinical presentation is location-dependent but often includes pain or cramping, vomiting, distension, and reduced or absent passage of stool or gas for abdominal obstructions. Airway obstructions produce dyspnea or stridor, while urinary obstructions cause reduced urine output. Diagnosis relies on history, physical examination, and imaging such as X-ray, ultrasound, or CT, complemented by laboratory tests.

Treatment aims to relieve the obstruction and correct underlying causes, using fluid and electrolyte management, decompression (for example, nasogastric suction in GI cases), and definitive interventions that may include endoscopy or surgery. Prognosis depends on cause, location, and promptness of treatment, with risk of complications like ischemia or perforation if treatment is delayed.
