Näytön is the genitive singular form of the Finnish noun näyttö, which means display or screen. It is used in Finnish to refer to the screen of a device in possessive phrases, for example näytön koko (the size of the display) or näytön resoluutio (the display’s resolution).

A display is a device that presents visual information to a user by rendering images from electronic signals. Modern displays rely on flat-panel technologies rather than the older cathode-ray tubes. The main technologies used today are LCD (liquid-crystal display) with LED backlighting, OLED (organic light-emitting diode) panels, and increasingly microLEDs. E-ink displays are used primarily in e-readers where low power consumption and high readability in bright light are advantageous. Displays differ in brightness, contrast, color accuracy, viewing angles, and power use. Typical form factors include desktop monitors, laptop screens, smartphones, televisions, and dedicated signage. External displays connect to hosts via interfaces such as HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C, and many devices support VESA mounting standards for brackets and stands. In usage, display quality affects readability and visual comfort, with ergonomics and color management playing important roles.

The development history begins with CRTs, moved to LCDs in the late 20th century, then LED-backlit LCDs, followed by OLED and other self-emissive technologies. Environmental considerations include energy efficiency and end-of-life recycling.
