Närvirõhu, often translated as nerve pressure or nerve compression, refers to a condition where a nerve is subjected to excessive mechanical stress. This pressure can originate from various sources, including anatomical structures, inflammation, or external forces. When a nerve is compressed, it can lead to a range of symptoms, depending on the specific nerve involved and the location of the compression.

Common symptoms of närvirõhu include pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in the area supplied by the affected nerve. The pain can be sharp, burning, or dull and aching. Numbness and tingling sensations, often described as pins and needles, are also characteristic. Muscle weakness may occur if the compressed nerve controls motor function, potentially leading to difficulty with movement or loss of function.

Several factors can contribute to nerve pressure. In the case of entrapment neuropathies, nerves can become compressed as they pass through narrow anatomical passages. For example, carpal tunnel syndrome involves the compression of the median nerve in the wrist. Inflammation of surrounding tissues, such as from an injury or a medical condition like arthritis, can also lead to nerve compression. Swelling or the formation of scar tissue can put pressure on nearby nerves. Repetitive motions or sustained awkward postures can also contribute to chronic nerve irritation and pressure.

Diagnosis of närvirõhu typically involves a physical examination, nerve conduction studies (NCS), and electromyography (EMG). Treatment depends on the underlying cause and severity of the compression. It may include rest, physical therapy, medication to reduce inflammation, bracing or splinting, or in some cases, surgical intervention to relieve the pressure on the nerve.
