Numbritena is a fictional genus of deep-sea cephalopods used in speculative biology and worldbuilding fiction. The name blends numb- (numbness) with tenta- (tentacle), with the -ena suffix commonly used for cephalopod genera. It was introduced in a 22nd-century field guide to imagined oceans and has since appeared in various speculative narratives.

Description and biology: Members of the genus are described as mantle lengths of roughly 12–28 cm, with a total length reaching up to about 60 cm when extended by their eight arms. The body is generally pale and semi-translucent, with bioluminescent organs along the mantle and arms that aid in signaling and camouflage. A distinctive trait is a modular nervous system that can desensitize distal nerves locally, a hypothetical adaptation thought to help tolerate high pressure and rough contact with the seafloor.

Habitat and ecology: Numbritena is placed in deep abyssal habitats, such as the imagined Pelagora Ocean, at depths of approximately 2,500 to 5,500 meters. It is conceived as an opportunistic predator and scavenger, feeding on small crustaceans, detritus, and organic particles that sink through the water column. The species is described as relatively solitary, with occasional vertical movements that may bring individuals into nutrient-rich zones.

Reproduction and life history: In the fictional accounts, numbritena may reproduce sexually through episodic events or longer breeding seasons, depending on the narrative. Lifespan and growth rates vary by version, but the emphasis is on extreme environmental adaptation rather than rapid reproduction.
