nohkan

The nohkan (能管) is a traditional Japanese bamboo flute used primarily in Noh theater. It is the principal melodic instrument in the Noh orchestra, providing high, piercing lines that cue actors and shape mood on stage.

The instrument is a transverse flute, typically carved from a single piece of mature bamboo. It is usually about 50 to 60 centimeters long and features several finger holes along the front surface and a thumb hole on the back. A notch near the blowing end creates the edge that the player sounds across. The bore is generally cylindrical or slightly tapered, producing a bright, penetrating tone.

Playing technique involves blowing across the edge to produce a focused, high-pitched sound. The player uses embouchure, breath control, and fingerings to articulate notes; ornamentation and glissando are common in Noh music. Because of its brightness and projection, the nohkan is often used for long sostenuto lines, character cues, and atmospheric effects rather than loud volume.

History and use: The nohkan arose in the Muromachi period (14th–16th centuries) as part of Noh musical tradition. It is closely associated with Noh theater and the ensemble that accompanies performances. Modern nohkan makers continue the craft, producing instruments in various timbres and tunings, prized for their precise intonation and clear response.
