Nivelsiteitä is the Finnish term for ligaments, the tough bands of fibrous connective tissue that connect bones across joints. They help stabilize joints, guide movement, and limit abnormal motions to protect structures such as cartilage and nerves.

In terms of structure, ligaments are primarily composed of collagen fibers, arranged in parallel bundles to resist tensile stress. They have relatively low blood supply, which influences their healing after injury. Some ligaments contain elastin, contributing to limited elasticity, and contain specialized cells that remodel tissue in response to stress.

Functions of nivelsiteitä include providing joint stability by restricting excessive joint opening or rotation, transmitting mechanical information to the nervous system, and contributing to proprioception. Their arrangement and orientation reflect the specific demands of each joint, with some ligaments designed to be taut throughout movement and others to tighten at particular angles.

Intracapsular ligaments lie inside the joint capsule but outside the synovial cavity, such as the cruciate ligaments of the knee; extracapsular ligaments lie outside the capsule, such as the knee’s collateral ligaments. Some ligaments are capsular, forming part of the joint capsule, while others are extrasynovial yet outside the capsule.

Clinical relevance includes injuries commonly known as sprains, caused by overstretching or tearing of ligaments during sports or accidents. Diagnosis typically involves physical examination and imaging, with treatment ranging from rest and rehabilitation to surgical reconstruction in severe cases. Proper rehabilitation emphasizes restoring range of motion, strength, and proprioception to reduce recurrence risk.
