Nightingale (Luscinia megarhynchos) is a small passerine bird in the family Muscicapidae. It is a migratory species that breeds in Europe and parts of western Asia and winters in sub-Saharan Africa. The species is known for its long, melodious song, often delivered from dense cover during the day and especially at night in the breeding season.

Description: It measures about 13.5 to 15 cm in length. The plumage is generally brown above and pale below, with a reddish tail in many individuals. The male is typically more striking during the breeding season, possessing a louder, richer song, while the female is paler and drabber.

Habitat: It favors scrubby, hedgerow and coppiced woodland, reed beds, or gardens with dense ground cover near water. It forages mainly on the ground for insects, spiders, and other invertebrates, and sometimes takes fruit or berries.

Song and behavior: The nightingale is celebrated for its powerful, varied song, a rapid cascade of phrases that can include mimicked sounds. Males sing to defend territory and attract mates; females rarely sing. The male's song is often heard at night, hence the common name.

Breeding and nest: The female builds a cup-shaped nest among dense vegetation, usually low to the ground. She lays 4-6 eggs, which are blue-green tinted with brown spots. Incubation lasts about 12-14 days; both parents feed the chicks.

Conservation: The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, though regional declines can occur due to habitat loss, agricultural intensification, and climate effects.

Cultural significance: The nightingale has long figured in poetry and folklore, notably in classical works such as Keats's Ode to a Nightingale, and in myth as Philomela.
