Nelivetoja refers to drivetrains and vehicles in which propulsion is distributed to both the front and rear axles. They are designed to improve traction on slippery surfaces, rough terrain, and under adverse weather conditions. In Finnish automotive language, neliveto is used broadly to denote four-wheel-drive configurations, including both permanent all-wheel-drive systems and selectable four-wheel-drive setups.

Two main categories are commonly discussed. Permanent or full-time four-wheel drive uses a center differential to continuously send torque between the front and rear axles, providing consistent traction on paved roads as well as rough terrain. On-demand or part-time four-wheel drive engages rear wheels via a transfer case and is typically selectable by the driver; some models include a low-range gear for challenging off-road conditions. Modern systems often incorporate electronic controls, limited-slip logic, or torque vectoring to optimize grip.

Neliveto is widely found in sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and dedicated off-road models. In Finland and other Nordic countries, neliveto is valued for winter driving, snow, ice, and rural or forested roads. Vehicle manufacturers frequently pair neliveto with comprehensive safety systems such as traction control, anti-lock braking, and electronic stability control to enhance overall handling in poor conditions.

Historically, four-wheel drive originated in military and agricultural applications and gained prominence in civilian markets after World War II, with vehicles like Jeeps and Land Rovers popularizing the concept. Today, neliveto remains a common feature in regions with demanding weather and terrain, though its benefits depend on proper tires and sensible driving, rather than drivetrain alone.
