Nekomas are a genus of small, nocturnal, cat-like carnivores described in the fauna of the fictional Nyara Archipelago. They range in size from 40 to 60 cm in body length and weigh about 2.5 to 5 kg. Fur patterns vary by island, commonly with tabby-like stripes or spots; they have large amber eyes, sensitive whiskers, and retractable claws. They are adept climbers and swimmers.

Nekomas are mostly solitary, forming small family groups only during breeding. They hunt by stealth for small mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects, and they will scavenge when necessary. They are territorial, marking boundaries with scent and vocalizations. Their activity peaks at night, and they rely on camouflage and acute hearing to locate prey.

Habitat and distribution: Nekomas inhabit temperate and tropical forests, river margins, mangroves, and dense understory across the archipelago. They favor areas with plentiful cover and access to streams, which support both hunting and denning sites. They are adaptable to secondary growth but are affected by significant habitat disturbance.

Reproduction and life cycle: Mating season varies by island; gestation lasts about 60–70 days, with litters of 1–4 kits. Weaning occurs around 8–12 weeks, and sexual maturity is typically reached around one year. Young nekomas remain with their mother for several months before dispersing.

Conservation and culture: In the fictional setting, nekoma populations are generally stable, though habitat loss and invasive species pose potential threats. They feature prominently in local folklore as forest guardians and appear in art and storytelling; in some narratives, nekomas are trained as scouts or messengers.
