Navigátor is a term used in several Central European languages, including Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, and Polish, to denote a person who determines a vessel’s or aircraft’s course, or a device that assists in navigation. In everyday language it can refer to a crew member responsible for navigation or to a piece of equipment such as a GPS navigator or in-car navigation system.

Etymology and usage: The word derives from Latin navigare, “to sail,” and is related to the English word navigator. In many languages it has a broad meaning that spans both the human role of plotting a course and the tools that perform navigational tasks.

Historical role: Traditionally, a navigator plotted courses, estimated position, and interpreted charts. On ships and in early aviation, the navigator relied on celestial observations, charts, and dead reckoning to determine location and route, communicating with captains and crew to keep the journey on track.

Modern usage: Today, navigátor often designates a navigation device or software, such as a GPS navigator used in cars, boats, or smartphones. In aviation and maritime contexts, the navigator was once a formal crew position but has largely been replaced by advanced avionics and electronic navigation systems. In many vehicles and consumer products, “navigátor” describes a navigational aid rather than a person.
