Nationalism is a political ideology and a social sentiment that identifies a people with a particular nation and asserts that the nation should have political self-government, sovereignty, or exclusive membership in a political community. It often relies on shared language, culture, history, religion, or ethnicity to imagine a collective identity and to justify political claims.

Two broad forms are commonly discussed. Civic nationalism grounds national belonging in shared political values, legal equality, and allegiance to a state, and it can be inclusive of diverse groups. Ethnic or primordial nationalism ties membership to ethnicity, bloodline, or culture, and it can be more exclusive. In practice, many nationalisms combine elements of both forms and shift over time.

Historically, nationalism contributed to the creation of modern nation-states, mass education, standardized languages, and national symbols. It has also been linked to both unifying social cohesion and exclusionary or violent outcomes, including discrimination, forced assimilation, or conflict when minority groups challenge the dominant national identity.

Critiques emphasize essentialism, homogenization, and the suppression of minority rights. Proponents argue that nationalism can foster political solidarity, cultural preservation, and democratic participation when anchored in inclusive civic principles. In the contemporary era, nationalism remains influential in regional independence movements, party politics, immigration discourse, and international relations, often interacting with globalization, interdependence, and multilateral institutions.
