This organism is not a fungus, plant, or animal, but rather a protist, which means it is a single-celled eukaryotic organism that can exhibit complex multicellular behavior during certain life stages.

The life cycle of märkäpusteli begins with haploid spores that germinate into flagellated cells called swarm cells. These cells fuse in pairs to form diploid zygotes, which then develop into a multinucleate plasmodium—a single cell with many nuclei. When environmental conditions become unfavorable, such as drought, the plasmodium transforms into a fruiting body, which is the recognizable yellow or orange structure.
