Most models fold into two handles that enclose a selection of tools, with pliers forming the core on many designs. Common tools include one or more knife blades, a saw blade, screwdrivers (flat and Phillips), wire cutters, a can opener, a bottle opener, a file, scissors, an awl, and a ruler. Some configurations add tools such as a wood chisel, leather punch, hook blade, or micro-screwdrivers. Tools are typically accessible by unfolding them from the handles; many multitools offer one-handed deployment and some include locking mechanisms to secure tools during use.

Two broad families exist. Plier-based multitools use the handles to create a set of pliers when opened, providing gripping and cutting strength. Knife-style multitools omit large pliers and emphasize portability and weight savings. Materials are generally stainless steel, with occasional titanium or aluminum components; finishes range from polished to bead-blasted. Locking blades and tools are common on higher-end models to prevent accidental closure.

The modern multitool gained popularity in the late 20th century. Leatherman popularized the category with its first tools in the 1980s, while Swiss Army knives and similar tools laid groundwork for combining multiple implements in a single hand tool. Major brands include Leatherman, Victorinox, Wenger, Gerber, and SOG.

Uses commonly include outdoor recreation, camping, electrical and mechanical trades, travel, and emergency kits. Design considerations include tool accessibility, blade and cutting-tool quality, lock reliability, weight, and corrosion resistance. Care involves cleaning after exposure to moisture or salt, drying thoroughly, and applying light lubricant to pivots and locking mechanisms.
