Leatherman

Leatherman Tool Group, commonly known as Leatherman, is an American company that designs and manufactures multitools and related knife products. It was founded in 1983 by Tim Leatherman in Portland, Oregon, after Leatherman conceived a folding, plier-based tool during a trip to Europe. He teamed with Steve Berliner to refine the concept and bring the Pocket Survival Tool (PST) to market, marking the company's first production multitool.

The PST offered pliers plus a selection of fold-out tools, including knives, saw, files, screwdrivers, can and bottle openers, and rulers. The device's practical utility and durable construction helped establish Leatherman as a leading name in outdoor and professional tool markets, with distribution through outdoor retailers, mail order, and catalogs.

Over the years Leatherman expanded its line with models such as Wave, Charge, Surge, and Skeletool, among others. These tools typically feature locking blades, one-handed opening, and external-access tools that can be deployed without fully opening the handle. The company has developed variations for different trade and outdoor needs, including compact and high-capacity tools, and offers models with titanium or stainless-steel construction, built-in bit drivers, and replacement parts.

Leatherman remains privately held with its headquarters in Portland. The company markets its products worldwide and is recognized for rugged, repairable design and a focus on durability rather than many fashion-oriented features. Its tools are used by tradespeople, outdoor enthusiasts, emergency responders, and in everyday carry.
