Hargreaves, who collected specimens on the eastern coast of New Guinea. Two species are currently recognized: mokiniam miniensis and mokiniam australis. Morphologically, mokiniams are characterized by a compact body, a prehensile tail, and a dense fur that varies in coloration from pale grey to deep brown. Adult individuals typically weigh between 0.6 and 1.2 kilograms and measure 25 to 35 centimeters in length excluding the tail.
