mitteelukindlustus

Mitteelukindlustus (non-life insurance) is the category of insurance contracts that do not insure human life. In Estonia, it covers a wide range of risks and products outside life insurance, including property insurance (kinnisvara kindlustus), motor vehicle insurance (autokindlustus) and other transport insurance, liability insurance (vastutuskindlustus), travel insurance (reisikindlustus), and accident or health-related coverage not tied to a life policy (õnnetus- ja tervisekindlustus).

Key features: policies are typically issued for a limited term (often one year). The premium is determined by risk factors such as the value of the insured property or the driver's record, the chosen coverage amount, and any deductible or franchise. The policy lists insured events, coverage limits, exclusions, and conditions for making a claim. Many contracts allow riders or extensions to tailor coverage.

Usage and claims: individuals commonly use non-life insurance to protect homes, vehicles, and travel, while businesses insure property, equipment, and liability. When a loss occurs, a claim is evaluated against the policy terms and, if approved, compensation is paid up to the stated limits. Unlike life insurance, non-life contracts normally do not build a cash value or savings component.

Regulation and consumer protection: non-life insurance in Estonia is governed by national law and EU regulatory framework, with supervision by the Financial Supervisory Authority (Finantsinspektsioon). Consumers receive information obligations, terms and conditions disclosure, and contract rights consistent with EU directives on insurance distribution and consumer protection.
