Autokindlustus, or car insurance, is a contract that provides financial protection against losses arising from the ownership and use of a motor vehicle. In Estonian usage, autokindlustus refers specifically to the coverage purchased to cover vehicle-related risks, including damage, theft, and liability.

Most auto insurance policies include a mandatory element of third-party liability coverage, which pays for injuries or property damage caused to others in an accident for which the driver is responsible. Optional coverages vary by jurisdiction and insurer, and commonly include collision coverage (damages to the insured’s own vehicle from crashes), comprehensive coverage (non-collision risks such as theft, fire, or weather), personal injury protection or medical payments, uninsured/underinsured motorist protection, and road assistance or rental car reimbursements.

When a loss occurs, the policyholder files a claim, the insurer assesses the damages, and compensation is provided according to policy terms, subject to deductibles and limits.
