Metsäkkauris, or *Scorzonera humilis*, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to Europe, particularly common in Finland, where it is often found in meadows, forest clearings, and along roadsides. It belongs to the Asteraceae family and is closely related to other species in the *Scorzonera* genus, such as the common scorzoneroot. The plant is also known by its Finnish name, which translates roughly to "forest scorzonera" or "woodland scorzoneroot."

Metsäkkauris typically grows to a height of 30 to 80 centimeters, with slender, dark green leaves that are lance-shaped and arranged alternately along the stem. Its small, yellow flowers bloom from late summer to early autumn, forming dense clusters at the top of the plant. The roots of metsäkkauris are long, tapering, and slightly woody, resembling those of its edible relative, though metsäkkauris itself is not commonly cultivated for food.

While not widely recognized as a culinary plant, metsäkkauris has historical and traditional uses in some European regions. Its roots can be peeled, boiled, and eaten raw or cooked, though they are generally less sweet and more bitter than those of cultivated scorzoneroot. The plant is also occasionally used in herbal medicine for its mild diuretic and digestive properties, though scientific research on its medicinal effects is limited.

Ecologically, metsäkkauris plays a role in its native habitats, supporting pollinators such as bees and hoverflies with its nectar-rich flowers. It is generally considered a hardy and adaptable species, thriving in a variety of soil types, though it prefers well-drained, slightly acidic conditions. Conservation efforts are not typically focused on this species, as it is not currently classified as threatened.
