Metallised refers to a surface or material that has been coated with a thin layer of metal. The metal coating is typically very thin, often ranging from nanometres to micrometres, and is applied to impart properties such as electrical conductivity, reflectivity, barrier performance, or altered surface characteristics. The term is common in reference to polymer films, papers, textiles, and various substrates including glass and ceramics.

Metallised coatings are produced through methods such as physical vapor deposition (evaporation or sputtering), chemical vapor deposition, or electroplating. Metals commonly used include aluminum, silver, copper, and nickel, selected for their conductivity, reflectivity, or cost. Substrates frequently include plastic films like polypropylene or polyester (PET), as well as paper and textiles. Applications span a range of industries and uses.

Key applications include metallised film capacitors, where a thin metal layer serves as electrodes on a dielectric film; metallised packaging films that provide a barrier to moisture and oxygen while remaining lightweight; electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and reflective coatings for optics and solar energy; and decorative or functional metallised textiles and laminates.

Challenges and considerations involve ensuring good adhesion between the metal and substrate, preventing diffusion or corrosion at interfaces, and dealing with pinholes or seam defects. Recycling and end-of-life disposal can be complex due to the layered nature of metallised materials. The term metallised is often used interchangeably with metallized in American English.
