Mattenband is a Dutch term that can refer to several forms of narrow strap or edging used in relation to mats and carpeting. In common usage it denotes a flexible band that edges, binds, or secures mats, carpet panels, or upholstery. The material is usually a textile such as polypropylene or polyester, but cotton or nylon may also be used. Widths vary widely depending on the application, typically ranging from a few millimeters to several centimeters.

Construction methods include woven, braided, or flat webbing. Edging or binding can be applied by folding and stitching, heat sealing, or attaching a separate trim. In many applications mattenband serves both a functional and an aesthetic role by preventing fraying at the edges and providing a finished look.

Applications of mattenband are diverse. It is used to edge and secure floor mats, carpets, and upholstery, and can also function as a fastening or anchoring strip in combination with adhesives, staples, Velcro, or hooks. In automotive and furniture manufacturing, mattenband may be employed to attach mats to backing or to create durable edge finishes. In packaging and industrial settings, it can provide a lightweight, resistant binding for matting products.

Care and maintenance depend on the material. Synthetic bands are generally resistant to moisture and staining, but may degrade with prolonged exposure to direct UV light or high heat. Regular inspection for wear, fraying, or loosening fasteners helps extend lifespan.
