Manufactura, or manufacturing, is the set of activities that transform raw materials, components, and information into finished goods through labor, machines, tools, and chemical or biological processes. It includes planning, product design for manufacturability, procurement, production, quality control, and logistics, and spans sectors such as automotive, electronics, textiles, food processing, and consumer products.

The concept arose from crafts and workshops in preindustrial periods. The industrial revolution introduced mechanization, specialized labor, and powered production methods, enabling mass production and assembly lines. In recent decades, globalization, information technology, and automation have integrated manufacturing into complex supply chains and enabled more flexible and data-driven operations.

Manufacturing can be organized by processes: discrete manufacturing produces distinct units (cars, appliances); process manufacturing creates bulk quantities (chemicals, fuels); and batch manufacturing combines elements of both. Production strategies include make-to-stock, make-to-order, and hybrid approaches, along with mass production, flexible manufacturing, and just-in-time systems.

Modern manufacturing relies on methods such as lean manufacturing to minimize waste, Six Sigma for quality, and total quality management. It uses automation, robotics, computer-aided design and manufacturing, enterprise resource planning, and manufacturing execution systems, along with sensors, data analytics, and the growing role of additive manufacturing (3D printing).

Economically, manufacturing contributes to GDP, employment, and exports and links with suppliers and distributors through global value chains. It also raises environmental and social considerations, including energy use, emissions, waste, and resource efficiency, leading to approaches like sustainable and circular manufacturing.
