Malmotorer is a term used in Swedish to describe motor dysfunction affecting coordination and fine motor control. It is not a formal diagnostic category in international classifications, but is widely used in clinical, educational, and research settings to refer to impaired motor function that cannot be explained by a single organ disease. In many cases more precise diagnoses such as developmental coordination disorder (DCD), cerebral palsy, or a neuromuscular condition are identified.

Causes and presentations: Malmotorik can result from neurodevelopmental differences, perinatal injury, genetic or metabolic conditions, or acquired brain injury. People with malmotorer may appear clumsy or awkward, have trouble with balance and gait, and struggle with fine motor tasks such as handwriting, cutting with scissors, tying shoelaces, or manipulating small objects. In children, school performance and participation can be affected; in adults, work tasks and daily activities may be impacted.

Assessment and diagnosis: Evaluation is typically done by occupational or physical therapists, sometimes in collaboration with physicians. Clinicians use observations, functional tasks, and standardized tests to determine the extent of motor impairment and distinguish it from other conditions. Common tools include movement assessments and handwriting measures, alongside consideration of medical history and development.

Management: Interventions are usually multidisciplinary and individualized. Goals include improving daily function, reducing activity limitations, and supporting participation. Approaches include occupational therapy to enhance activities of daily living and fine motor skills, physical therapy for posture and gait, school or work accommodations, assistive devices, and training for parents and caregivers.

Epidemiology and prognosis: DCD is a prominent context for the term and is estimated to affect a notable minority of school-aged children, with a higher prevalence in boys. Prognosis depends on the underlying cause and access to early, consistent therapy; many individuals improve with intervention, while some experience persistent limitations.
