Makulaarseid refers to conditions affecting the macula, a small, specialized area in the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. This central vision is crucial for detailed tasks such as reading, driving, and recognizing faces. When the macula is damaged, these abilities can be significantly impaired, leading to blurred or distorted central vision while peripheral vision often remains unaffected.

The most common cause of macula-related issues in older adults is age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD exists in two forms: dry and wet. Dry AMD, which is more prevalent, involves the thinning of macular tissue and the accumulation of yellowish deposits called drusen. Wet AMD, though less common, is more severe and occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina, leaking fluid and blood, which can rapidly damage the macula.

Other conditions that can affect the macula include diabetic macular edema, which is a complication of diabetes where blood vessels in the retina leak fluid, and macular holes, which are small tears or separations in the macula.

Symptoms of macular problems can vary but often include a gradual or sudden loss of central vision, wavy or distorted lines, and difficulty seeing in dim light. Early detection and management are important for many macular conditions to slow progression and preserve vision. Regular eye examinations are recommended, particularly for individuals over the age of 50 or those with risk factors like a family history of AMD or diabetes. Treatment options depend on the specific condition and its stage, and may include lifestyle changes, nutritional supplements, or injectable medications.
