wavy

Wavy is an adjective describing objects or patterns that feature a series of smooth curves or ridges that rise and fall in a regular, flowing manner. A wavy line, for example, consists of continuous bends rather than sharp turns or straight segments, often approximating a sine wave in its most regular form. The term is also used to describe textures and surfaces that show such undulations.

In nature, wavy patterns appear in water surfaces where waves are generated by wind or currents, in plant leaves with gentle contoured edges, and in geological formations such as dune ridges and laminated rock layers. Wavy contours can also be observed in light and shadow, giving a sense of movement in photography and painting.

In human use, “wavy” describes hair texture that includes soft bends or waves, typically between straight and curly types. It is also common in design and art to employ wavy lines and shapes to convey dynamism or softness. In engineering, wavy or undulating profiles appear in corrugated materials, which gain stiffness from the regular curvature of their cross-section, and in architecture and product design to create visual rhythm.
