Approximating refers to the process of finding a value, function, or solution that is close to a target quantity when an exact representation is unavailable or impractical. It is a central idea in mathematics, science, engineering, and computing, used to simplify models, speed computations, or cope with measurement uncertainty.

Terminology: the thing being approximated is called the approximand, and the constructed close form is the approximant. Distinctions are made among numerical approximations (numbers), analytical approximations (closed-form expressions), and probabilistic or statistical approximations (models of uncertainty).

Common methods: local linearization such as Taylor or Maclaurin series; polynomial or rational approximations; interpolation; discretization of continuous problems; regression and least squares for data fitting; and various reduction techniques that replace a complex model with a simpler surrogate.

Error and convergence: approximations are evaluated by error measures, such as absolute or relative error, and by how the error behaves as a limit is approached (convergence). Truncation, rounding, and propagation of error are important considerations for reliability and stability.

Theory and algorithms: approximation theory studies how closely functions can be approximated by chosen classes (polynomials, trigonometric series, etc.), including results like the Weierstrass theorem and minimax or Chebyshev approximations. In computer science, approximation algorithms seek provable guarantees of near-optimality for hard problems, often described by an approximation ratio.

Applications span science and engineering, digital signal processing, data smoothing, and numerical simulation, where exact solutions are unavailable or too costly. The choice of approximating method depends on desired accuracy, computational resources, and the properties of the problem at hand.
