Maavoimat, or the Finnish Army, is the land forces branch of the Finnish Defence Forces. It is responsible for defending Finland’s territory, maintaining national security, and supporting civil authorities in emergencies. The Maavoimat operates alongside the Navy and Air Force and works with international partners to improve interoperability and crisis management.

The Army is led by the Commander of the Finnish Army and comprises professional staff, conscripts in training, and reservists who can be mobilized for operations. The force emphasizes rapid mobilization and homeland defense, with a brigade-based structure designed to cover Finland’s large territory and diverse terrain, including winter and arctic conditions. It relies on distributed units and robust logistics to sustain operations in various environments.

Manpower mainly comes from conscription; most men serve for several months, and women can volunteer for service. Training emphasizes basic infantry skills, mobility, and combat readiness, followed by ongoing reserve training and participation in national and international exercises.

Capabilities include infantry, mechanized units, armor, artillery, engineers, and reconnaissance, supported by air-transport and logistics elements. The Maavoimat prioritizes modern equipment, integrated C4ISR systems, and interoperability with allied forces to respond to both conventional threats and hybrid security challenges.

Historically, the Maavoimat traces its roots to Finland’s independence and early 20th-century military development. It underwent major reforms after the Cold War and again in the 2010s to enhance readiness, resilience, and civilian defense integration. International cooperation includes joint exercises and training with partner nations, with alignment to NATO standards and practices following Finland’s accession to NATO in 2023.
