Lühinärvuse, also known as short-sightedness or myopia, is a common refractive error of the eye. It occurs when the eye's focusing power is too strong for its length, causing distant objects to appear blurry. This happens because light rays entering the eye are focused in front of the retina instead of directly on it.

There are several causes for lühinärvuse. One common reason is an eyeball that is too long. Another is a cornea or lens that is too curved. In most cases, lühinärvuse develops during childhood or adolescence and may progress as the individual grows. Genetics plays a significant role, and individuals with parents who have myopia are more likely to develop it themselves. Environmental factors, such as prolonged close-up work and limited outdoor exposure, are also believed to contribute to its development and progression.

The primary symptom of lühinärvuse is blurred vision when looking at distant objects. This can lead to squinting to try and see more clearly. Individuals may also experience eye strain, headaches, and fatigue, especially after reading or using screens for extended periods. In severe cases, lühinärvuse can increase the risk of other eye conditions later in life, such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and myopic maculopathy.

Lühinärvuse is typically diagnosed through a comprehensive eye examination conducted by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. This examination involves assessing visual acuity and measuring the refractive error. Correction methods aim to reduce the eye's focusing power. The most common solutions are corrective lenses, including eyeglasses and contact lenses, which bend light so it focuses correctly on the retina. Surgical options, such as LASIK and PRK, are also available for some individuals to permanently alter the cornea's shape.
