Læringsmåder, or learning styles, refer to the theoretical concept that individuals learn best through different sensory channels or approaches. While the idea of distinct learning styles has been popular in educational theory and practice, its empirical validity has been widely debated and questioned by researchers.

The most commonly cited learning styles include visual (learning through sight), auditory (learning through hearing), kinesthetic (learning through physical activity and touch), and reading/writing (learning through text). Other models propose more nuanced categories, such as logical-mathematical, linguistic, spatial, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalistic learners. The underlying premise is that tailoring instruction to a student's preferred learning style will enhance comprehension and retention.

However, extensive research has failed to provide robust evidence supporting the hypothesis that matching instructional methods to a student's self-reported learning style leads to improved learning outcomes. Many meta-analyses and reviews have concluded that there is little to no scientific basis for the widespread application of learning style instruction. Critics argue that focusing on learning styles can lead to oversimplification of learning processes and may even hinder students by limiting their exposure to diverse learning methods.

Despite the lack of empirical support, the concept of learning styles remains influential in some educational circles. Some educators continue to use learning style inventories and adapt their teaching strategies based on perceived student preferences, often emphasizing the importance of engaging students through various modalities. Nevertheless, the prevailing scientific consensus suggests that while students may have preferences, a multimodal approach to teaching, which incorporates a variety of instructional methods accessible to all learners, is generally more effective than attempting to cater to specific, scientifically unsupported learning styles.
