Läpäisytestaus, often translated as penetration testing or pentesting, is a cybersecurity practice where authorized simulated cyberattacks are conducted on a computer system, network, or web application to evaluate its security. The goal is to identify vulnerabilities that an attacker could exploit, allowing organizations to proactively address these weaknesses before they are exploited by malicious actors.

Pentesting can be performed manually, using automated tools, or a combination of both. It typically involves reconnaissance, scanning, gaining access, maintaining access, and covering tracks. The process is usually conducted in a controlled environment to minimize the risk of unintended damage.

There are several types of penetration tests, including black-box testing, where the tester has no prior knowledge of the system; white-box testing, where the tester has full knowledge of the system; and gray-box testing, which falls somewhere in between. The scope and methodology of a pentest are agreed upon with the client beforehand, often outlined in a statement of work.

The results of a penetration test are documented in a comprehensive report, detailing the vulnerabilities found, their severity, and recommendations for remediation.
