Luchtverversing is the process of replacing stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air. This is essential for maintaining good indoor air quality, which in turn affects the health, comfort, and productivity of building occupants. Stale air can accumulate pollutants such as carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), moisture, and odors. Effective luchtverversing helps to dilute and remove these contaminants.

There are two primary methods of luchtverversing: natural and mechanical. Natural luchtverversing relies on infiltration, which is the unintentional leakage of air through cracks and openings in the building envelope, and exfiltration, the uncontrolled escape of indoor air. It can also be achieved through intentional openings like windows and doors, often referred to as natural ventilation. Mechanical luchtverversing, on the other hand, uses fans and ductwork to actively supply fresh air and exhaust stale air. This is commonly implemented through mechanical ventilation systems, which can be simple exhaust fans or more complex systems like heat recovery ventilators (HRVs) or energy recovery ventilators (ERVs). HRVs and ERVs pre-condition the incoming fresh air using the energy from the outgoing stale air, improving energy efficiency.

The optimal rate of luchtverversing depends on various factors, including the building's occupancy, activities taking place inside, and the presence of specific pollutant sources. Building codes and standards often specify minimum requirements for luchtverversing to ensure healthy indoor environments. Inadequate luchtverversing can lead to issues such as stuffiness, headaches, fatigue, and the buildup of mold and mildew due to excess moisture. Conversely, excessive luchtverversing can lead to unnecessary energy loss and discomfort. Therefore, a balanced approach is generally recommended.
