Low-complexity is a descriptive term used across disciplines to indicate that a system, problem, or model requires relatively few resources, rules, or descriptive elements to understand, implement, or execute. It is inherently relative, depending on context and constraints such as time, memory, or cognitive load.

In computation and algorithms, low complexity typically means that a problem can be solved with small or predictable resource use. In complexity theory, problems in P or with linear or near-linear time and space are often regarded as low complexity relative to more intractable classes. Simple sorting, basic arithmetic, or searching tasks are standard examples. In practice, an algorithm may be considered low complexity if it has small constant factors or a straightforward control flow, even if worst-case guarantees are not optimal.

In software engineering and systems design, low complexity also refers to maintainability and understandability. Metrics such as cognitive complexity, cyclomatic complexity, or module count capture the mental effort required to work with code. Low-complexity designs favor clear interfaces, fewer special cases, and modular structures.

In data science and statistics, low-complexity models or signals are preferred for interpretability and robustness. Parsimonious models, regularization, or sparsity constraints aim to explain data with fewer parameters. In signal processing, low-complexity signals are those that admit concise representations, enabling effective compression and noise reduction.

On a theoretical level, Kolmogorov complexity describes the length of the shortest description that outputs a given object. Objects with short descriptions are considered low in Kolmogorov complexity, reflecting inherent regularity.

Limitations include the relativity of the term; an approach labelled low-complexity in one setting may not be so in another. Low complexity can come at the expense of expressiveness, accuracy, or adaptability, and practical performance depends on implementation details and input distributions.
