Lokaliseringsteknikk refers to the methods and technologies used to determine the precise position of an object or entity. This can range from very large scales, like locating a ship at sea, to very small scales, such as identifying the position of a component within a microchip.

At its core, localization relies on measuring distances or angles to known reference points. Common techniques include triangulation, where an object's position is calculated based on its distance to at least three known points. Trilateration is another method, which uses distance measurements from multiple known locations.

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), such as GPS, are perhaps the most widely recognized localization technologies. These systems use a constellation of satellites to transmit signals that receivers on Earth can use to calculate their position. However, GNSS signals can be unreliable indoors or in urban canyons.

For indoor environments, various technologies are employed. Wi-Fi positioning uses the strength of Wi-Fi signals to estimate location. Bluetooth beacons, particularly Low Energy (BLE) beacons, broadcast signals that can be detected by mobile devices, enabling precise proximity-based localization. Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology offers very high accuracy for short-range localization, often used in industrial settings or for asset tracking. Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs), found in smartphones and other devices, can also contribute to localization by tracking motion and orientation, though they are prone to drift over time and are often combined with other methods.

The application of lokaliseringsteknikk is vast, spanning navigation, surveying, asset management, autonomous systems, augmented reality, and emergency services. The choice of technique depends heavily on the required accuracy, operating environment, cost, and the specific application.
