Proficient use of digital audio workstations (such as Pro Tools, Logic Pro, or Ableton Live), plugins, microphones, preamps, and mixing consoles is essential, as is good communication with artists, producers and directors. Attention to workflow, gain staging, monitoring levels, and documentation also supports reliable results.

Education and training vary. Many ljudingenjörer hold degrees in audio engineering, music production, or acoustics, while others enter through vocational programs or apprenticeships.
