Lipohypertrophy is a medical condition characterized by the abnormal enlargement of fat tissue. It is not a tumor or cancer, but rather an overgrowth of subcutaneous fat cells in specific areas of the body. This condition can occur in localized areas or more generally.

There are two main types of lipohypertrophy. Localized lipohypertrophy, often referred to as lipomatosis, involves the development of one or more distinct fatty lumps or deposits under the skin. These lumps are typically soft, movable, and painless, though they can sometimes cause discomfort due to their size or location. Generalized lipohypertrophy affects larger areas of the body, leading to a more widespread accumulation of fat.

The exact cause of lipohypertrophy is not always clear. In some cases, it may be associated with genetic factors. It can also be influenced by hormonal changes, such as those that occur during puberty or pregnancy. Certain medications, particularly insulin injections used to treat diabetes, can also contribute to the development of lipohypertrophy at the injection sites due to repeated trauma to the fatty tissue.

Diagnosis is usually made through a physical examination. Imaging techniques like ultrasound or MRI may be used to confirm the nature of the fatty deposits and rule out other conditions. Treatment for lipohypertrophy is generally not required unless the condition causes significant cosmetic concern or physical discomfort. In such cases, options may include surgical removal of the fatty deposits, liposuction, or management of any underlying contributing factors like medication adjustments.
