Linerlagen is a Dutch term referring to the layers that form a liner system used to prevent leakage and contamination in containment facilities. Linerlagen are designed as barrier systems that restrict the movement of liquids from the contained space into surrounding soil and groundwater. Common applications include landfills, tailings ponds, reservoirs, wastewater lagoons, and environmental remediation projects.

A typical linerlagen configuration is a composite liner consisting of a primary low-permeability layer, such as a geomembrane (HDPE, LLDPE), combined with a secondary barrier like compacted clay (or a geosynthetic clay liner). Additional components may include a drainage or leak-detection layer to collect and transport any infiltrating liquid, a protective cover layer against puncture, and a separation layer to prevent mixing of materials.

Design and construction rely on standards for hydraulic conductivity, chemical compatibility, and durability. System performance is verified through quality assurance/quality control during installation, seam testing of geomembranes, pedestal alignment, and in-situ tests for seepage. Leakage detection systems may be incorporated to monitor for breaches.

Maintenance involves monitoring, regular inspections, and repair of any punctures or deformations. Aging processes such as chemical attack, temperature fluctuations, and mechanical stress are considered in long-term performance. While often used in environmental containment, linerlagen concepts also appear in other contexts requiring barrier layers to control moisture or contaminant migration.
