Lastkaj is a term used in Norwegian and other Scandinavian languages to denote a loading dock or quay where goods are loaded or unloaded from ships, trains, or trucks. The word combines last, meaning cargo, with kaj, meaning quay, and is used in port, warehouse, and logistics contexts to describe the interface between transportation modes and storage.

In practice, a lastkaj is a reinforced platform at the edge of a dock or yard, designed to align with a vessel’s hatch or with road and rail access. Typical features include a level, slip-resistant surface; edge protection or fenders to absorb impacts; and connections to cranes, forklifts, or container handling equipment. The lastkaj is usually integrated with adjacent storage areas, warehouses, or gate facilities to support efficient transfer of goods.

Operations at a lastkaj involve moving cargo such as pallets, containers, bulk bags, or roll-on/roll-off items between the transport mode and storage facilities. Equipment used may include forklifts, reach stackers, or gantry cranes, depending on cargo type and volume. In containerized handling, dock levelers and dock doors may bridge height differences between trucks, trailers, or railcars and the dock surface. Inland applications may use similar facilities as truck-to-rail or truck-to-warehouse interfaces.
