Laser tag is a tag-and-combat simulation game in which players wear sensor-equipped vests and use handheld infrared guns to “tag” opponents. The objective is to score points by hitting opponents while avoiding being tagged oneself, often within the context of team play or objective-based missions.

Equipment and operation rely on infrared technology. The gun emits modulated infrared signals, and sensors on the vest(s) register hits. Each hit typically causes an on-screen or audible cue, and can deactivate a player for a set period or deduct points, depending on the game rules. Most systems are controlled by a central computer that tracks scores, player status, and round timing. Modern arenas incorporate electronics, sounds, lighting, and sometimes RFID or optical sensors to enhance feedback and scoring.

Gameplay formats vary. Common modes include free-for-all and team play, as well as objective-based games such as capture the flag, territory control, or base defense. Rounds are usually 5 to 20 minutes, with respawns in many formats. Scoring systems may reward accurate tags, eliminations, accuracy bonuses, or successful completion of objectives.

History and usage have made laser tag a common feature in family entertainment centers, arcades, and theme parks. The activity originated in the United States during the 1980s as a commercial real-time combat simulation and has since evolved with digital sound, arena design, and more compact home or mobile systems.

Safety and accessibility are central. Infrared beams used in laser tag are non-ionizing and generally considered safe when used as intended. Eye protection is often provided or required, and facilities enforce rules to prevent unsafe behavior and ensure a safe playing environment.
