In optics and photography, a large aperture refers to the lens opening with a low f-number, through which light passes to form an image. The aperture size is expressed as an f-number; because larger relative aperture corresponds to a smaller f-number, a large-aperture lens can admit more light than one stopped down to a higher f-number. This enables faster exposure times and improved performance in low-light conditions, while also influencing depth of field and image quality.

Besides light gathering, aperture controls depth of field. A wide-open aperture yields a shallow depth of field, producing strong subject isolation and pronounced background blur (bokeh). However, aberrations such as spherical aberration and coma are often more pronounced at maximum aperture, which can reduce overall sharpness at the image edges. Stopping down to mid-range apertures generally sharpens the image across the frame and reduces vignetting and field curvature, while still maintaining substantial light intake.

Large-aperture lenses are favored for portraiture, street and low-light photography, sports and events, and macro work where isolation or faster shutter speeds are desired. In astronomy, larger telescope apertures collect more photons, enabling observations of faint objects and higher potential angular resolution, subject to diffraction limits and atmospheric conditions. Modern camera and lens design aims to maximize performance at wide apertures while minimizing aberrations.

Designers balance speed, weight, cost, and image quality. Larger apertures require more complex optics, can be heavier and more expensive, and may exhibit more sensitive autofocus behavior and more pronounced field performance issues at the extremes. Practical use often involves stopping down a stop or two to achieve a compromise between brightness, sharpness, and depth of field.
