Lakótelepek is a Hungarian term that literally translates to "dwelling plots" or more commonly "housing estates." The word combines lakó, meaning resident or dwelling, with telek, meaning plot or site. In Hungarian urban and suburban contexts it is used to describe planned residential areas that typically contain multiple housing units laid out on a coordinated site plan. These estates often feature uniform architecture, shared green spaces, and communal amenities such as playgrounds, sports facilities, and sometimes local shops.

The concept of lakótelepek emerged in the early twentieth century as cities in Hungary and other Central European states sought to address rapid population growth and housing shortages. Initially, many of these estates were built in the interwar period and later expanded under socialist urban planning initiatives. They were designed to provide affordable and efficient living spaces, often with standardized building designs to speed up construction and reduce costs.

Lakótelepek differ from the broader Hungarian term háztartási házak, which refers simply to residential houses, by their planned community structure. While a háztartási ház can be a single-family home in a rural area or urban street, a lakótelep represents a collective development, sometimes encompassing several streets or blocks that form a contiguous neighborhood.

Modern Hungarian cities continue to use the term to describe both newly built and older housing estates. Many lakótelepek are undergoing renovation programs to improve living conditions, upgrading infrastructure, and adapting the architectural heritage to contemporary standards while preserving the characteristic layout of the original plans.

Although the term is specific to Hungary, similar concepts exist under different names in other European languages, such as "Wohnenurlaubs" in German or "habitations urbaines" in French. These synonyms highlight a common trend in mid‑twentieth‑century European urban planning that balanced efficient construction with communal living.
