Kylmäkytkennät, also known as cold connections, are a method of joining two pieces of metal without the use of heat or solder. This technique is commonly employed in jewelry making and metalworking, particularly when working with softer metals like copper, silver, and brass. The process involves creating a mechanical bond between the metal pieces.

There are several types of cold connections. One prevalent method is riveting, where a rivet is passed through pre-drilled holes in both pieces of metal and then hammered or flattened to create a secure joint. Another common technique is stapling or using jump rings, where small rings or formed staples are used to link the pieces together. Wire wrapping is another form of cold connection, where wire is used to entwine and hold multiple components in place. Bezel setting, often used for gemstones, can also be considered a cold connection as it involves shaping metal around a stone without melting.

The advantage of cold connections is that they preserve the temper and structural integrity of the metal, which can be compromised by heat. This is particularly important for delicate or antique pieces. Cold connections also allow for the use of mixed metals that might have different melting points, making soldering impossible. While generally strong, cold connections may not be as robust as soldered joints, especially under significant stress.
